June 3, 2009 – Tapas Rias (Middleton)

Pat says: I chose this restaurant because it had a good review in the newspaper, and because it was something different from our usual choices.   The tables and booths are nicely laid out, not too close together, and the walls are painted deep colors that set a more formal mood.  The way to do tapas is to have lots of time and money, then drink a little sangria, order a couple of tapas, drink a little sangria, order a couple of tapas, drink…………We tried each ordering our own dish, and salads to share, and although the food was very good, I just don’t think we got the whole tapas experience.   So, I ordered a chicken skewer with rice and onions, and it was nicely grilled and tasty.  We also had a combination plate, with calamari and potatoes, a meatball and some fish with cucumbers.  I can’t really give this restaurant a rating, because we’d need to try it again, with more time, money and sangria.

erin says: we decided to try tapas, which was a new experience for all of us.  We’re not used to the small plate approach.  We’re used to the huge pile of food approach.  Anyway, Pat said we ordered our own small plates, which I didn’t intend to do at the time.  The four of us shared the combination plate, which Pat already described.  The “fish” was salmon.  Brian really enjoyed the calamari.  Pat ordered a salad which she at least partially shared with Kevin and allowed me and Brian to sample.  I loved the goat cheese.  It might have been something close to Ensalada Calata or something?  I can’t remember the exact name and there is no menu posted online that I can find.  I ordered the Ensalada Rusa (potato salad with tuna) and shared it with Brian.  Brian and I ordered garlic shrimp (something close to Gambas Ali Ajillo).  We both liked this dish.  The shrimp were served in a red pepper garlic sauce.  We also ordered marinated pork (Roxo … something).  I was not a big fan of that one.  It was a very thin slice of pork in something resembling chicken gravy.  Pat and Kevin ordered Pinchu tapas, one chicken, one beef.  I had a potato off of one of those, and it was good.  The goat cheese on the salad was best part for me.  I have to agree with Pat.  Wednesday night was just not a good night for us to try this.  We need to have lots of time, patience, and the ability to drink alcohol and not have to do much the next day.  The restaurant was PACKED, which is very surprising for a Wednesday.  8 out of 10.

I would say you definitely need to give Tapas Rias another try!!!

My husband just took me there last night for the first time for a date night. He had heard about the place from some individuals at work.

It was amazing! Yes, you do need to get over the fact that you don’t get a huge plate loaded with food, but instead you get the experience of trying multiple tapas without having to weigh in on choosing just one to order, and if you don’t like it you’re stuck with it… but instead if you don’t like it you’ve hardly wasted anything, and it you really enjoyed it you don’t feel bad about ordering another one!
