May 17, 2008 – Flat Top Grill
Pat says: This is the second time that we’ve been to Flat Top grill. Once you get past the whole “get in line and pick your own dishes, pick your own ingredients, pick your own meat” business, it’s good food. I’m not too enthused about the atmosphere, and on this visit the place was filled with giant family groups out to celebrate graduations so the lines to choose ingredients were especially long and slow. Our server did a great job of keeping up with us – drink refills, getting Brian a knife, etc. And, I really like the food. What more could a person want than endless brown rice and broccoli? I’d like to keep going back until I’ve tried (almost) all of the different sauces. Next time, I’m going to have an egg cooked into my food. This is a good place to go when you’re really hungry – for $2 extra it’s all you can eat. I’d give the Flat Top Grill an 8 out of 10 and if the atmosphere was just a touch less frantic, I’d give it a 9. One of my favorites.
Brian says: Flat Top Grill seems to work out better once you know what you’re doing. The first couple visits resulted in me getting bowls of food I didn’t like (my own fault, since I selected what went into it), but now that I’ve figured it out, I think it’s really good. They seem to have improved the speed at which things come out– even with the place packed for a weekend lunch rush, they got our bowls out to us in a reasonable amount of time. Taking young children there might not be the best idea, though. I agree with Mom about the frantic atmosphere.. the way the place is designed, I felt like I was constantly in the way of the waitstaff, and other customers who were trying to figure things out were in my way. Otherwise, a unique experience and good service. 8 out of 10.
erin says: I have definitely had some bad experiences there – someone’s bowl of food got “lost” for a while, and trying to catch our waiter’s attention but missing many times. Overall, I like it. I especially like it now that I’ve started making what they call “Pad Thai”. My biggest problem with all of the stuff I make there is that the sauce isn’t strong enough – but the Pad Thai sauce has a good kick. I like going there, no doubt I will be back. 8 out of 10.

and now they have breakfast….. I have to try that

We finally had breakfast, and I thought it was very tasty. I loved my pancake. Brian would warn you not to put too many toppings on your breakfast. He made french toast with craisins, butterscotch chips, toffee, and something else….. and then added syrup at the table, and it was a sugary mess. There is no choice to go for a single trip at breakfast, so while it’s extremely wasteful, you could abandon your sugary mess and get a new plate if you wanted. I also love that they have fresh fruit, oatmeal, and muffins available. I got the ingredients together for a Denver-ish omelette, which turned out pretty well. It wasn’t a filled omelette like I was expecting, more like a folded scramble. It’s a lot of food – so go hungry and plan to not eat for the rest of the day. We were almost the only people there right after they opened for the morning, so I would say finding a table shouldn’t be a problem (on a Saturday).

We really don’t like the breakfast at Flat Top. We both had an egg scramble and were disappointed with the lack of interesting seasonings available. Our meals were totally bland and flavorless. We wished that we could have used the array of interesting sauces available for lunch and dinners and mentioned that to the manager. We won’t be back for breakfast, but lunch, once in a while, is good.
